The path is the goal - and when speaking of our trip to the excavations of Stabia, that's the case. It all started with our train, which stopped in a tunnel for about half an hour -at 40 degrees. Arrived at the train station, there were no signs, which bus to take or way to go. So we once again used Googlemaps and asked people. After walking for an hour on country lanes, we reached our destination. And it wasn't what I expected. I thought the excavations were like Herkulaneum or Pompeii - a connected area of diverse buildings, but they told us, there were 2 mansions, 800 metres apart from each other. So after visiting the first, we continued our hike and walked along a highway (of course without a sidewalk) to the next one. And was it worth all the efforts? If you love ancient excavations, then I would say "yes". Mainly because, in the Naples area,"thanks" to the volcanic eruption, everything is better preserved than anywhere else, so that you can still see the wall paintings and floors and you don't need much imagination to travel back 2000 years in time. You also have the whole sight to yourself and almost have any other tourists, who "get on your nerves".
And what was most important for me - we got the adventure and travel story for free.
Der Weg ist das Ziel - Und das war im Falle Stabia auf jeden Fall so. Erst einmal zur Erklärung: In der Nähe der Stadt Stabia, in der Nähe Neapels, gibt es zwei antike, römische Villen. Ich hatte nur von den Ausgrabungen von Stabia durch unseren vorherigen Neapel- bzw. Pompeiibesuch erfahren, da diverse Ausgrabungen auf dem Ticket vermerkt waren. Ich hatte erwartet, dass es dort ebenfalls ein großes, zusammenhängendes Areal mit Ausgrabungen gibt. Da hatte ich mich aber getäuscht, denn die beiden Villen liegen ungefähr 800 Meter von einander entfernt an einer Landstraße. Unser Trip hatte zuvor schon super angefangen, als wir ungefähr eine halbe Stunde mit der Bahn in einem Tunnel feststeckten. Am Bahnhof angekommen gab es auch keine Beschilderung und so mussten wir uns mal wieder durchfragen und auf Googlemaps verlassen. Nach einer ungefähr einstündigen Odysee durch Hinterhöfe und Landstraßen gelangten wir endlich zur ersten Villa. Um zur 2. zu gelangen,muss man eine Schnellstrasse entlangwandern.:) Und hat sich der ganze Aufwand gelohnt? Für Antikenfans sind die Villen schon interessant, da natürlich in der Umgebung Neapels "Dank" des Vulkanausbruchs alles so gut konserviert ist, dass man sogar noch Wandmalereien sehen kann und gar nicht mal viel Fantasie braucht, um sich in die antike Zeit zurückzuversetzen. Außerdem hat man kaum andere Touristen um sich und kann sich alles in Ruhe anschauen.
